Description

Reporting to the CMO, the AVP of Inpatient Medical Services provides clinical and administrative leadership for all inpatient rehabilitation services. The AVP ensures the highest standards of patient care, operational efficiency, physician engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Responsibilities include clinical management within inpatient rehabilitation units and administrative oversight of all inpatient acute rehabilitation care.

The AVP leads clinical quality improvement, directs program growth to increase census, and aligns inpatient rehab services with organizational goals. All inpatient physicians and APNs report to this role (APNs also have a dotted line to the Inpatient APN Clinical Lead). Key focus areas are physician alignment, patient safety, staff development, clinical outcomes, and best practice implementation.

The AVP works closely with medical staff, administration, and the CMO to:



Deliver high-quality, cost-effective, patient-centered care.


Set clear expectations for medical staff.


Lead program development, strategic planning, and process improvement.


Represent inpatient rehab in hospital committees and on the Medical Executive Committee.


Support business and referral development, maintaining strong relationships with referral sources.



Essential Job Functions



Provide 70% clinical and 30% administrative services.


Identify and address current and future patient, family, and system needs.


Address workflow and process challenges to optimize efficiency.


Encourage staff engagement, feedback, and performance improvement.


Foster a collaborative, professional environment aligned with the organizations mission and goals.


Oversee medical team care delivery, quality metrics, and continuous performance improvement.


Ensure adequate staffing, resources, and budget management.


Develop and implement policies in line with hospital and regulatory requirements.


Evaluate service performance against standards, develop and execute improvement plans, and meet set targets.


Conduct annual performance evaluations and ongoing professional practice evaluations for medical staff.


Collaborate with nursing and therapy leadership.


Support ongoing professional development and training.



Education & Experience



Board Certified MD or DO in Pediatrics (required); experience in critical and/or complex care preferred.


Graduate degree in business, healthcare, or medical management strongly preferred.


Strong knowledge of healthcare administration, financial management, and outcome improvement.


Excellent communication and leadership skills.


Meets all medical staff accreditation requirements.



Certifications



AHA BLS Provider (required)


PALS Provider (required)



Licensure



Current NJ MD license (or eligible).
