What You’ll Do
- Provide high-acuity nursing care in a PCU/stepdown environment with appropriate monitoring and interventions.
- Manage patients across medical stepdown and cardiac stepdown needs (based on assigned unit during orientation).
- Titrate and monitor commonly used infusions including cardiac and vasoactive drips (as applicable to unit protocols).
- Support complex post-procedure and post-operative care (including patients following CABG and other cardiac/respiratory interventions).
- Perform ongoing assessment, recognize changes in condition, and escalate care appropriately.
- Coordinate safe care delivery with the unit’s support team (CNA, RT, charge nurse, RT assigned to unit).
- Complete required orientation and competency requirements, including an EKG competency exam prior to arrival (compliance requirement).
What You Need
Required
- RN license
- 2 years PCU RN experience
- First-time travelers: 2 years acute care (permanent staff) RN experience
- BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Ability to complete EKG competency exam as part of compliance prior to arrival
Preferred
- LVAD certification (required for 2 West only, if assigned)
About the Assignment
This PCU stepdown assignment supports a fast-paced, traveler-friendly environment with 24–25 beds depending on unit assignment. Common patient needs may include respiratory failure, sepsis, frequent monitoring after surgery or cardiac interventions, and cardiac-focused stepdown care such as post-CABG and post-procedural monitoring. Ratios: approximately 1:3–4.
Scheduling notes (as applicable):
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend
- Must work 4 days one week and 3 days the next week (mandatory)
- Holiday expectations: 2/3 major holidays
- Orientation includes 2 days hospital orientation + 2 unit shifts
