Standard Qualifications:   Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Pre-Analytic  Recognize and resolve questionable orders and patient identification. Greet patients, answer phones, order testing, label samples, and receive samples in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) based on requesting testing. Confer with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation. Obtain blood specimens by performing venipuncture's, heel sticks, and finger sticks. Instruct patients in a sensitive and understandable way on proper collection method for urine and fecal samples. Follow established guidelines for missed collections, recollects, and difficult phlebotomies. Process samples using aseptic technique and prepare required paperwork for ACRH testing and reference lab testing. Scan orders into the patient record per established guidelines.  Analytic  Verify specimen identification and appropriateness of sample type/volume for the indicated testing. Demonstrate proficiency performing CLIA waived testing. Demonstrate proficiency performing CLIA non-waived testing. Demonstrate proficiency performing immunohematology testing, including ABO/Rh determination, antibody detection, and compatibility testing. Recognize and investigate questionable results, equipment malfunctions, and technical problems then take timely steps to resolve. Perform assigned proficiency testing in the in the same manner as patient samples, as closely as possible.  Post-Analytic  Prepare and communicate results of analyses clearly and legibly. Reconcile and document pending tests. Recognize critical results and document notification of appropriate providers. Prepare and dispense blood products and Rh-immune globulin for administration. Obtain and distribute reference lab result reports to the appropriate providers and scan into patient record per established guidelines.  Maintenance/QC  Ensure operation of laboratory equipment by calibrating, performing linearity testing, completing required preventive maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, and initiating repairs as necessary. Perform and document scheduled QC procedures as required by the manufacturer, troubleshoot QC problems, perform corrective action as necessary. Record daily temperature/humidity values and perform/record eyewash maintenance. Review and approve completed worksheets, QC records, and maintenance records.  Knowledge  Serve and protect patients by adhering to professional standards, all established policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state, and/or accrediting requirements. Participate in the orientation and training of other personnel. Demonstrate competency in designated lab sections at prescribed intervals. Maintain/update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications, and participating in professional societies, as applicable. Provide consultative services related to laboratory practices and testing. Maintain knowledge of theory and methodology for applicable laboratory testing.  General  Keep work area and laboratory areas clean, organized, and free of clutter. Follow all safety rules, including universal precautions. Demonstrate proficiency in all computer-related tasks, including troubleshooting issues and logging service requests, as indicated. Organize and prioritize workload to avoid delays for patients, testing, and/or reporting results. Make reasonable efforts to limit the use and disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI) to the Minimum Necessary in order to perform job. Ensure an adequate level of supplies based on anticipated needs, ensure that work areas are stocked, and maintain records of inventory orders and receipt. Ensure efficient operations by using appropriate supplies with minimal waste and using down time constructively. Evaluate, address, and/or escalate requests for add-on testing, general laboratory information, and billing inquiries as appropriate. Create, review, and revise department documentation. Assist with evaluating, implementing, and validating new instruments, products, and/or services. Recognize and perform needed duties even when not directly assigned. Work any shift as assigned, work overtime as needed. Oversee retention and storage of laboratory and phlebotomy hard-copy documentation.
