Standard Qualifications: Description of Role: Oncology social work is the primary professional discipline that provides psychosocial services to patients and families facing the impact of a potential or actual diagnosis of cancer. Rationale: The complex psychosocial needs of patients with cancer and their families require specialized knowledge and skills to achieve optimal outcomes. Scope of Practice: The scope of practice includes providing comprehensive psychosocial services and programs throughout all phases of the cancer experience including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, palliative care, end-of-life and bereavement. Specific Elements: Advocacy for and protection of patients' dignity, confidentiality, rights and access to xxxxxxxxxxx*anization and provision of patient and caregiver support and education as it relates to the cancer experience.Oversee and respond to screening for psychosocial distress on an inpatient and outpatient basis.Psychosocial assessment of clinic, inpatient and outpatient oncology patients, recognizing that cancer affects the whole person (mind, body, and spirit) throughout the continuum of care.Utilization of a wide range of clinical interventions designed to address current and potentially future challenges within the cancer patient and caregiver experience.Utilization of knowledge and clinical skills in assisting the patient and family with advance care planning and administering the Virginia Advance Directive for Health Care.Provision of services to at-risk populations, including assistance with negotiating barriers to cancer information, screening, treatment and resources within the institution and the community .Represents social work on the inpatient multidisciplinary palliative care team and provides direct services to needed patients regardless of diagnosis.Coordinates and facilities a variety of support groups to enhance the coping skills and peer support of cancer patients and their caregivers.Collaboration with other clinical oncology disciplines in the planning and provision of timely and efficient services to cancer patients and their families.Utilization of clinical documentation, statistical reporting and evaluation to improve services, ensure quality and develop programs.Representation on the Cancer Care Committee to ensure support and compliance with the Commission on Cancer Standards related to the provision of psychosocial care.
