You will be part of a community hospital where your contributions are appreciated and your voice is heard - where work force diversity is encouraged and personal growth is supported .  RN Labor and Delivery: Full-Time Nights  Position Summary: Reports to: Director of Women's Services Essential Functions: Performs thorough assessments of the assigned labor and delivery, pre/postpartum, newborn, and surgical patients. Assessments include obtaining patient history, assessing body systems, outcomes of treatments and procedures performed and the psychosocial needs of the patient. Assessment of patient family needs during death and dying. Incorporates age-specific factors in provision of care. Performs age-specific nursing assessments, assesses age-specific safety issues (e.g., size of IV catheter for newborn, appropriate care needs of pregnant teen) and appropriately interprets age-specific patient data and responses.  1. Safely and effectively performs basic level procedures and treatments maintaining sterile and aseptic technique for assigned patients, including but not limited to: safe effective medication administration, insertion of peripheral intravenous catheters, care and maintenance of the peripheral intravenous catheters, insertion of nasogastric tubes, care and maintenance of the nasogastric tubes, care and maintenance of gastric tubes, insertion of urological catheters, care and maintenance of urological catheters, care of surgical drains, perform surgical dressing changes, perform wound care. Provide support and care for patient and family during the death and dying experience.  2. Safely and effectively performs intermediate/infrequent procedures and treatments for the medical and surgical patients, including but not limited to: care and maintenance of the central venous catheter  3. Provides ongoing evaluation of all assessments, procedures and treatments. Updates plan of care based on the evaluation. Notifies and consults physician and mid-level practitioner on patient outcomes and status, using effective communication skills. Plans and provides patient education based upon identified patient needs.  4. Documents correctly all care and outcomes of care provided to the assigned patients in the medical record. Receives and follows through with physician orders. Effectively documents updates of the plan of care. Provides a thorough and organized report to team members regarding assigned patient's status through the established unit report system.  5. Directs and oversees care performed by the licensed practical nurse and the certified nursing assistant. This may include performing the care overseen as needed.  6. Demonstrates an awareness of and competence in ensuring patient safety, including medical/healthcare error reporting, interdisciplinary collaborative team approach to patient care planning, fall prevention measures on the unit, restraint alternatives, restraint patient checks, medication safety (look alike/sound alike drugs, safe storage and use of narcotics, Heparin/Insulin double checks, abbreviation use), infant abduction prevention and response and inpatient suicide precautions. Serves as an advocate for patient safety and patient rights.
