Standard Qualifications:   1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill to provide nursing care to children, adolescents, adults,  and geriatric Infusion/Pain Management patient.  2. Performs job tasks that consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning  and delivering care to patients within department and Cancer Center wide.  3. Systematically and continually performs the functions of assessing, planning, implementing  and evaluating the care according to the nursing process and Oncology Nursing Society Standards of Practice and National Comprehensive Cancer Network for assigned patients in the Infusion/ Pain management centers.  4. The oncology nurse partners with patients, families, the interdisciplinary team and community  resources to provide optimal care. Demonstrates leadership in the delegation of components of the nursing plan to appropriate professional and non-professional staff.   Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of cancer pathophysiology, disease management and chemotherapy, understanding the role of infusion/pain and symptom management (including implantable pumps, hepatic arterial infusion pump, and intraperitoneal chemotherapy).Must obtain Chemotherapy/biotherapy within one of hire.  6. Initiates and documents patient and family teaching based on assessment of needs. Uses  appropriate patient education documentation according to plan of care for the infusion/pain  management patient.*  7. The Oncology Nurse contributes to the professional development of unlicensed and licensed  peers and interdisciplinary colleagues.   Creates a practice environment conducive to interdisciplinary excellence and collaboration among peers. Seeks opportunities for role modeling knowledge and skill in clinical practice. Mentors students and colleagues to expedite specialty knowledge and skill. Participates in the identification of learning needs related to cancer care for members of the interdisciplinary team. Recognizes formally and informally contributions of all disciplines in delivering care.  8. The oncology nurse uses ethical principles as a basis for decision-making and patient advocacy.   Individual undertakes an inventory of personal beliefs and philosophy regarding quality of life, use of artificial measures to sustain life, what constitutes a "good death" and the use of complementary and alternative therapy approaches. Discusses with colleagues ethical dilemmas in cancer care in a nonjudgmental environment of learning and open exchange. Communicates information about advance directives and encourages advance care planning with patients and families. Maintains patient confidentiality and privacy. Advocates for patients and families in decision-making discussions. Delivers nondiscriminatory care that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity, rights and cultural beliefs. Initiates ethics consultation to assist in solving ethical dilemmas.  9. The oncology nurse practices professionally in an evidence based model, systematically  evaluating the quality and effectiveness of care.   Participates in assessment and improvement activities relative to their position and practice environment. Collaborates with other disciplines to determine priority patient care issues for quality. Forms recommendations and develops action plans that address options for improving care. Synthesizes the results of evidence-based investigations, integrating findings into practice. Develops policy and procedure that assimilate the transition of national standards of care into individual practice settings. Consistently evaluates own practice related to job specific performance expectations, statewide regulatory requirements and national oncology nursing professional standards.  10. The oncology nurse will contact physician offices to request required patient information, including  prescriptions for treatment. The nurse will also schedule patients on computer database for  further treatments.
