Standard Qualifications: POSITION SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, is responsible for daily operations of the laboratory for the St. David's Medical Center. These duties include, but are not limited to, maintenance of accreditation requirements, personnel activities and education, testing and transport of specimens, and policies and procedures. This position requires in depth analysis and decision making. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES A. Manages the daily operations of the laboratory. 1. Supervises the shift supervisors, medical technologists, medical lab technicians, lab assistants and phlebotomist. 2. Coordinates and shares administrative and technical call duty. 3. Coordinates orientation and training of new employees. 4. Performs employee scheduling for the medical technologists, medical lab technicians, lab assistants and phlebotomist as needed 5. Oversees performance improvement activities of the Laboratory. 6. Assists with orders and maintenance of sufficient levels of supplies for the laboratory B. Oversees the technical activities for the laboratory. 1. Assists in coordination of quality control review for the technical areas. 2. Oversees intra-departmental policy and procedure development and implementation. 3. Coordinates a program of preventive maintenance and instrument performance checks for the analyzers. 4. Assists in monitoring compliance with accreditation requirements. 5. Ensures that the results of laboratory testing are readily legible and are delivered in a speedy manner. C. Maintains competency in all areas of the laboratory. 1. Demonstrates good knowledge concerning techniques and theories of the laboratory. 2. Performs tests accurately and precisely according to written policies and procedures and established practices. 3. Learns and adapts well to new instrumentation and techniques. 4. Ensures that assay results are reported in a timely, legible, and meaningful format with appropriate reference values and/or interpretive comments, and delivered to the appropriate clinical practitioner/clinical area. 5. Ensures that test selection and reference ranges are appropriate for the age of the patient. 6. Performs duties with minimal supervision, showing appropriate independent judgment. D. Ensures timely availability of results. 1. Organizes work and work area for efficiency of performance. 2. Performs work with sufficient speed to allow acceptable turnaround time of results. 3. Demonstrates good productivity as judged by efficient use of time andvolume of testing and other duties performed. 4. Prioritizes work appropriate to relative importance and critical nature. 5. Immediately reports and documents critical values and tests. E. Ensures the quality of analyses through quality control, quality assurance, and maintenance activity. 1. Performs quality control activities appropriate to each assay/test performed, and responds appropriately to outlier results. 2. Successfully participates in proficiency testing activities in each technical area for which the employee has responsibilities. 3. Participates in preventive maintenance and repair of instrumentation. 4. Participates in preparation of calibrators, reagents and other materials. F. Assumes responsibility for ensuring that various functions are performed during the work period. 1. Ensures that all QC functions needed for the shift are performed. 2. Ensures that all preventive maintenance functions are performed during the shift worked. G. Demonstrate understanding of HCA's and "Patients First" safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures as well as the safety of self and co-workers. 1. At least annually reviews all safety policies, procedures, and materials to maintain current knowledge of safety issues. 2. Practices safe work habits according to policies and standard procedures. 3. Maintains a clean and organized work area. H. Performs other duties as directed or required.
