The staff Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP/CCC) coordinates the Speech/Language Pathology care for a patient population of primarily adolescent, adult and geriatric persons who are acutely ill and have medically complex needs which result in mobility and activities of daily living deficits. The Speech/Language Pathologist accurately assesses patients' needs; identifies and initiates appropriate speech/language pathology interventions; provides patient and family teaching; works cooperatively with other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional speech/language pathology practice and interdisciplinary teamwork. These functions are carried out according to Hospital policy, Hospital mission statement, Performance Improvement plan, and the philosophy of the Therapy Department. The Speech/Language Pathologist participates in performance improvement and program development activities. Responsibilities include providing input into hospital budgetary planning process; contributing to cost effectiveness of services and programs provided by the Therapy Department; and maintaining positive relations with all stakeholders. Qualifications: Knowledge and Ability The Speech/Language Pathologist, working in a staff position, has a well-developed plan for meeting patient needs, demonstrates good clinical judgment and is competent in Speech/Language Pathology practice. Education/Experience The Speech/Language Pathologist is a graduate of an accredited School of Speech/Language Pathology, is certified in clinical competency by ASHA with current licensure in the state where the hospital is located as a Speech/Language Pathologist. One year of experience in the care of patients in an acute hospital setting. Current BLS required. Physical Requirements Good general health and stress coping ability. Full mobility and ability to participate in normal activity. Demonstrates ability to speak and hear to communicate with patients, physicians, hospital personnel and the public. Near vision acuity for accurate reading and ability to inspect and analyze work. Able to lift up to thirty (30) pounds. Able to bend, stoop and stretch with minimal physical limitation. OSHA Task Category The normal procedure involves potential exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue. Universal Precautions with patients should be adhered to in the unlikely event of accidental exposure with ready access to first aid.
