Department:LaboratorySchedule:Status 1 (36-40 hours/week)Shift:Variable ShiftsJob IDAL0015Job Details:Job Summary Performs a variety of laboratory tests, many of which are complex, involve numerous steps and techniques, and require use of professional judgement. Tests may be performed in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Serology, and EIA. Professional application of the principles, theories and techniques of medical technology are used to produce reliable test results, which aid the physician in diagnosis and treatment.
Job SpecificationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's Degree in medical technology or related science from an accredited school. Medical Certification is required. Additional training in specialty area may be required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: The Medical Technologist understands the use and limitations of laboratory equipment and apparatus, and is familiar with standard laboratory methods and techniques. Annually, an assessment of competency shall be performed to verify the employee's abilities with procedures and equipment. This documentation shall become a part of the employee's personnel file. The patient population must be considered when assessing job knowledge required from the employee.
ABILITIES, INTERESTS AND TEMPERAMENTS: Verbal ability is required to discuss test procedures and other matters with Pathologist, physicians, and patients.
Numerical ability required to calculate test results, use formulas, and measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.
Form perception required to see details of specimens under microscopic study.
Clerical ability required to accurately record, transcribe, and compare test results.
Color discrimination required to stain slide and to distinguish various shades and colors of specimens.
A preference for scientific and technical activities to perform a great variety of laboratory tests, to keep abreast of the latest innovations in methods of testing, and to develop new and improved methods for conducting laboratory tests.
A preference from activities carried out according to established processes and techniques to perform laboratory tests.
The ability to evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of tests.
The ability to perform precisely and accurately according to established procedures.
The ability to make sound decisions based on hospital and supervisors' guidelines.
Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.g. developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patient with congestive heart failure or cesarean delivery).
