Rich in tradition, uncompromisingly committed to excellence in academic Neurosurgery and endowed with gifted and dedicated faculty and trainees, Penn Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery was originally established as a division within the Department of Surgery in 1936 and achieved full department status in 1997. Now with 28 well-established faculty members, Penn Neurosurgery maintains an outstanding regional and national reputation. The Department is financially strong with a large clinical volume that presently includes four institutions, The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC), The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as well as referrals from affiliated hospitals throughout the region. Penn Neurosurgeons perform more than 5,000 operations each year involving a host of complex neurological disorders.

As part of Penn Neurosciences, Neurosurgery cooperates and collaborates with multiple departments including Neurology (medical treatment of nervous disorders including stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and others), Otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery (cranial base tumors, hearing and balance problems), Anesthesia (pain medicine), Psychiatry (depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders), and Rehabilitation Medicine (spinal cord injury, stroke). An institutional focus on translational research provides opportunities to apply the latest and safest approach to the surgical treatment of nervous system disorders.

Our research program, funded by more than $10 million in extramural grants, competes successfully for external funding and is interested in translation from the bench to the bedside. Penn Neurosurgery is involved in robust research programs led by basic scientists in traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, functional neurosurgery, and spine. Research ranges from laboratory bench efforts to understand basic mechanisms of brain injury, drug and device trials designed to improve treatment of brain tumors, immunotherapy of tumors, deep brain stimulation, stroke, and aneurysms, as well as movement disorders. In addition, Penn is the region's only participant in the National Cancer Institute-funded New Approaches to Brain Tumor Therapy (NABTT) Consortium, allowing access to novel clinical trials. Penn neurosurgeons are leaders in developing the latest treatment options and clinical trials, and are dedicated to training the next generation of neurosurgeons. Recent examples include adoptive cell therapy and Glioblastoma treatment, focal ultrasound for movement disorders and nerve regeneration through a Penn spin-out. This ensures that the latest technological advances, including the most effective imaging methods, surgical techniques, and management strategies are available to every patient.

A cohesive faculty of subspecialists and researchers are dedicated to high-quality patient care, education, basic science, clinical, and health services research. Their clinical, educational, and scientific activities are devoted to providing the best possible patient care and the generation of new knowledge. Their pursuit of these goals is reflected in their contributions to national and international scientific meetings and journals.

The Chair will provide strategic vision and leadership for the Department, sustaining its mutually supportive environment and sense of community. Applicants must have an MD or MD, Ph.D., and be a respected, active clinical neurosurgeon with a distinguished national record of clinical excellence and research in Neurosurgery.

As a member of the Board of Directors of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP), the Chair will have a substantial leadership role within Penn Medicine. As such, candidates should possess dynamic, inclusive leadership skills, administrative expertise, and a clear commitment to – and excellence in – the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and faculty. The applicant must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, as well as with the larger research community on campus, and to promote outreach to the community of clinical investigators. The candidate should articulate a compelling vision for the future of the Penn Medicine Department of Neurosurgery, the role of a surgical department within a highly regarded academic medical center, and in the field of Neurosurgery in general. A strong interest in fundraising is desirable. The candidate must be qualified for appointment as an Associate or full Professor in the Standing Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery in the Perelman School of Medicine.
