Description
The goal of the Complex Spine Surgery Fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center is to provide board-eligible graduates of neurosurgery training programs with comprehensive exposure to all facets of spinal care with a particular emphasis on Spinal Deformities, including Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. As a Fellow, you will gain expertise in treating a wide range of spine pathologies while performing a comprehensive array of surgical techniques - including cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgery, pelvic instrumentation, spinal osteotomies, tumors, and spinal trauma.All Faculty members within the Department perform Spine Surgery. Dr. Nockels’, program director, focuses primarily on complex deformities. The Division is actively involved with Basic Science Research efforts including experimental treatment of Spinal Cord Injury having recently received broad external funding for efforts studying Activity Dependent Plasticity, Effects of No-Go antagonism, and Stem Cell Transplantation. Additionally, opportunities exist to collaborate in the internationally recognized Biomechanics Laboratory of Dr. Patwarden including studies of Cervical Arthroplasty and the effects of various Lumbar procedures to optimize Sagittal Balance. Fellows are required to participate in didactic educational offerings throughout the program, including weekly spine boards, journal club, international webinars and postgraduate courses.
