Description

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is a 4 bed unit with 2 bed sedation unit. The PICU provides advanced medical care to critically ill infants, children and adolescents, using the most up-to-date technologies and medical techniques. We care for children with a variety of medical issues, ranging from post-operative care and recovery to acute life-threatening injuries and illnesses. Additionally, the PICU provides pediatric sedation for many different outpatient procedures. This allows our subspecialist partners to perform needed medical tests in a safe and comfortable manner.

Portsmouth PICU Overview
• 3-bed unit expandable to 9 beds
• Patient population from 4 months through adolescence
• NICU handles neonatal cases with full patient handoff
• RNs assigned to PICU work exclusively in PICU
• One on-call shift per pay period
• 10–12 weeks of on-the-job training (8-hour shifts)

Certifications (Hands-on through AHA or Red Cross)
• BLS
• PALS
• ACLS
• NRP
• S.T.A.B.L.E.

Skills

Minimum 12 months full-time RN experience in PICU, NICU, Pediatric CVICU, or other high-acuity pediatric critical care unit
