Standard Qualifications: Labor and Delivery This area is currently experiencing rapid growth, with more than 600 deliveries per month. The L&D includes 29 spacious LDRs, 6 private triage rooms, 6 bed pre-op and 6 bed recovery rooms for caesarean sections and other obstetrical procedures. In addition, there is a separate ante partum unit for patients needing extended stays. State of the Art O.R. suites for cesarean sections and other obstetrical procedures. Accommodation is timely with 6 O.R. suites. All staff are NRP, AWHONN/Electronic Fetal Monitoring-certified. An educational push is being done to encourage RNC specialty certification and ALCS. The educational focus for the future will be for high risk OB. Nursing procedures encourage the attainment of qualifications to perform placement of fetal scalp electrodes, intrauterine pressure catheters, and nursing amniotomy. Shifts vary. Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the unit's Director or designee the Charge Nurse assumes responsibility for direction and coordination of all functions in the unit on his/her designated shifts. In collaboration with other members of the management team, this individual is responsible for the ongoing assessment of the quality of patient care services provided in the unit. The Charge Nurse assumes responsibility for direction and coordination of all functions during the designated shift, functions as a resource person for staff members and assists in necessary education of individual members of the nursing unit. The Charge Nurse assumes responsibility for the overall quality of nursing care provided when she/he is on duty. The Charge Nurse makes decision regarding activities within these areas based on Administrative Operational Standards, Nursing Standards, Human Resources Standards, and Standards of Care for the unit, in collaboration with other members of the management team. Knowledge & Skills: Must be able to demonstrate understanding of national patient safety initiatives by strict compliance to all safety protocols as required by both HCA and North Austin Medical Center. Establishes priorities and makes independent decisions of a complex nature.
